Tank mounted agitators are used mainly to mix liquids in tanks but are also used to increase heat transfer and chemical reaction rates and to maintain homogeneity during storage. Agitators consist of a drive, shaft, and agitator blade. Agitator drives are electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic with most having gear reduction. Agitator shafts come in many different thicknesses and lengths, but the length relative to tank size is usually the most important factor. There are many types of agitator blades, but a few are 4 blade axial impellers, 4 blade radial impellers, hydrofoil impellers, 6 blade Rushton impellers, 3 blade propellers, and 3 blade saw tooth propellers. The different entry types are top entry, side entry, bottom entry, and clamp-on.
