Compressors increase the pressure of a gas. A positive-displacement compressor traps air into a compression chamber and reduces the volume of the chamber. A centrifugal compressor increases the speed of the air to the outside of the compressor housing and then exchanges the increase in velocity for an increase in pressure. Compressor systems commonly use dryers to trap moisture from the air or gas and receivers to even out variations in pressure and allow storage.
