Evaporators change a chemical from a liquid to a gas and are mainly used to concentrate product. A few types of evaporators are: falling film evaporators, rising film evaporators, rising-falling evaporators, forced circulation evaporators, and thin film evaporators. Film evaporators evaporate a product as it falls through the evaporator from the top. Climbing or rising film evaporators heat the product, producing steam which causes the liquid to rise. Rising-falling evaporators uses the principles of both a rising film evaporator and a falling film evaporator. Forced circulation evaporators circulate product at a high rate to prevent scaling or crystallization. Thin film evaporators, also known as agitated thin film evaporators, wiped film evaporators, or scraped surface evaporators, evenly distribute product over the inner surface with a rotor. Multiple-effect evaporators use several stages of evaporation, reusing heat from the previous effect.
